1st Midwest Autumn Craft Round Up a success!
TWO HUNDRED AND SIXTY-THREE women (and 6 men) from all around WA converged on Dongara over the weekend to participate in the first Midwest Autumn Craft Round Up (MACRUP), with some driving more than 700km just to attend.
Artists arrived to teach their art or craft in more than 45 hands on workshops from bead making to wool spinning. Taking even the most beginner through the steps to create a finished (or almost finished) project to take home.
Previously known as the Mullewa Autumn Round up, the event ran for over 20 years before closing in 2012. “I was sad to hear that the Mullewa Round up had closed” said Kym McGlinn, MACRUP event manager “I felt this was an important event, not only for the survival of many arts and crafts that struggle to attract new artists or gain enough exposure; but also the women’s health and wellbeing, especially those from rural areas where opportunities to mingle with likeminded women do not always arise”.
New friends were forged, old friendships were renewed and stories were definitely told. It was wonderful to hear of people catching up who had not seen each other for ten or more years and more often than not it was a hard decision between lingering a little longer over coffee to chat; or rushing back to class to finish their projects.
The success of the event has ensured that it will continue next year and dates have been set for the 16th & 17th April 2016. Information can be found on the Facebook page or website
The Autumn Craft Round Up Committee would like to thank all the volunteers on the day, the Mingenew/Dongara CWA, JAK’s Catering and sponsors of the event; Shire of Irwin, Priory Hotel, Dongara Mitre 10, Dongara Charities and Mingenew Sewing Supplies.
